Donut Quest

Hatfielders,
This week we have a special guest donut email writer, Cait Goodwin. Check out her cool Virtual Donut Quest below.
-MLJ

Virtual Quest

Discover one of the treasures of the local community by going on the HMSC Virtual Quest!  Just follow the directions below to find the letter clues.  The word at the end will tell you what you will find in the staff lounge this Wednesday at 10am:

Place the last letter of a famous Oregon Senator’s last name in square number one.
(Hint:  His first name was Mark.)

What invertebrate serves as the mascot of the HMSC Visitors Center Bookstore?  Its first letter is clue number two.
(Hint: http://hmsc.oregonstate.edu/visitor/bookstore.html)

There is one building at HMSC that is considered the safest destination (relatively speaking) in the event evacuation to Hwy 101 is not possible during an earthquake/tsunami.  The first letter of the federal organization that inhabits this building is your clue number three
(Hint:  http://hmsc.oregonstate.edu/committee/sfty1005.pdf)

Since 1894,
There’s been a Civil War.
Beavers vs. _ _ _ _ _
(The second letter is clue four.)

What HMSC weeding wizard drives “Squeaky” and wears a dark beard?  The first letter of his first name is clue number five.

What is yellow, sits outside the Visitors Center, and is NOT shaped like a flying saucer?  The first letter of the answer is clue number six.

Congratulations! With your puzzle solved and your mouth watering, head to the staff lounge at 10am on Wednesday and turn this virtual fun into a treasure for your taste buds.

        1                  2                   3                    4                    5                   6

If you enjoyed this Quest, try the actual outdoor “Yaquina Estuary Quest” or the “HMSC Sustainability Quest” during your lunch break.  Instructions for these and many more self-guided local adventures can be found in The Oregon Coast Quests Book (for sale at the HMSC Visitor Center Bookstore for only $6.00).  What a great stocking stuffer! http://seagrant.oregonstate.edu/freechoice/quest/OregonCoastQuests.html

Other places to eat donuts...

Donut Connoisseurs,
I was eating a donut outside of the Wednesday D-hour when I realized that we might be getting into a rut just eating donuts in the same place every week. So, here are some suggestions for other places you could enjoy a donut (with apologies to Dr. Seuss).

Donuts are delicious and versatile:

You can eat them in the car
Or getting loopy at the bar
You can eat them at the pound
While picking out a basset hound
You can eat them on a plane
Or walking through the pouring rain
You can eat them on a boat
And give the frosting to a goat
You can eat them on a bike
(‘twill be much safer if it’s a trike)
You can eat them in the lab
Or riding in a smelly cab
You can eat them on the go
Or at the newest Broadway show
You can eat them with the cat
While wearing mother’s fav’rite hat
You can eat them with a friend
And discuss ‘20s fashion trends
You can eat them with fried fish
And with your next-door neighbor, Trish

But, donuts are ALWAYS best if

You eat them on Wednesday mornings at 10:00 with all your friends and colleagues from HMSC
I can’t think of a rhyme for that, so just be there.

Donut Field Guide

The National Donut Society Field Guide to North American Donuts
by Mattias Johansson

With more than 700 donuts detailed with color photographs and descriptive text, this is the most comprehensive photographic field guide to the donuts of North America. The 762 full-color identification photographs show the donuts as they appear in natural habitats. Organized visually, the book groups all donuts by color and shape to make identification simple and accurate in the field, while the text account for each donut species includes a detailed physical description, information on edibility, season, habitat, range, look-alikes, alternative names, and facts on edible and poisonous species, uses, and donut folklore. A supplementary section on cooking and eating wild donuts, and illustrations identifying the parts of a donut, round out this essential guide.

Come test your donut-identifying skills Wednesday @ 10:00 in the Donut Lounge!

What else can Donuts buy?

Hatfielders,

As many (but sadly, not all) of you know, the price of the three dozen donuts we buy every week is about $18. I was thinking about what else you could get with that $18, and if it was possible to get anything else that would bring as much joy to our collective lives. Here are a few things I thought of:

17 movie sized boxes of Nerds® candy from Target (About $1, we’d get quite a sugar buzz)

3 used DVDs from Netflix ($6, we probably couldn’t agree what to get)

77% of a share in Microsoft Corp ($22, should have bought this in 1982)

50% of the cat adoption fee at the Lincoln County Shelter ($40, we could take turns petting it)

19% of the Complete Calvin and Hobbes hardcover box set ($94.50, I’d get nervous with all of you reading over my shoulder)

5% of the fall ice hockey session fee at the Eugene Ice Rink ($392, the exercise would do us all good)

0.5% of the cost of the Mazdaspeed Three-day racing school at Laguna Seca ($3699, unfortunately, the cars only have two seats)

0.04% of a 2008 Porsche Cayman ($49,500, maybe we can all chip in)

About 1 millionth of the highest-priced house ever listed ($165 million, and it’s in Beverly Hills, where else?)

I don’t know about you, but I think we should keep getting donuts. Feel free to volunteer to buy, if you haven’t in a while (or never).

What do you like about Donuts?

Just thought I'd share a few of the replies I got to last week's email, asking what people like about the weekly donut gathering.

A.G. Barks: "I like to talk about science while I chew with my mouth open."
G.W. Bush: "I enjoy trying to spell DONUT"
F.L. Smith: "What's this about donuts every week? This is the first I've heard of it."
D.M. Kind: "I like touching all the donuts while I pick the perfect one."
M.L. Johansson: "I like recruiting the next week's donut buyer. It makes me feel like a big man."

Donut Freaks?

Hatfielders,
So, breaking somewhat with tradition, this is going to be a semi-serious donut email. I was described as a "donut freak" the other day by a colleague. I was annoyed, but since this is a family email series, I'm not going to talk about what it first made me think. I've thought about it since, though, and decided that I'm not weird for liking the donut Wednesdays. I'll share some of the things I like about our tradition. I'd also like to hear your reasons. Email them to me and I'll post them to the blog (donutemails.blogspot.com). Help me out.
-MLJ

Three things I like about Wednesday Donuts:
1. Donuts, of course
2. Something to look forward to mid-week
3. It was Marisa Litz's idea, Londi Tomaro makes the coffee, community members buy the donuts, and I get the credit as Hatfield's famous Donut Freak. ;-)

ps->Come out and have a donut tomorrow at 10:00.

Emergency Ration Donuts

Hatfielders,

Here on the Pacific coast, the primary natural disaster threat we face is that of earthquakes and tsunamis. In the face of this threat, we’ll practice evacuating to the nearest high ground tomorrow at the usual donut time. Afterwards, I encourage you to join us in the donut lounge for a round-table discussion of survival foods entitled “Donuts: The Perfect Disaster Survival Food”. Some pertinent facts to get you thinking:

1. Donuts are easily portable

2. Donuts do not require utensils to eat

3. Donuts are calorie-dense

4. Donuts are highly palatable

5. Donuts are hypoallergenic

6. Donuts are a natural conversation-starter

7. Donuts can help you meet members of the opposite sex

8. Donuts can function as an emergency flotation device

9. Donuts will help you smite your enemies

10. I like Donuts

-MLJ

PS-> I got a very funny reply to last week’s email from a highly respected member of the community. I’ll share it anonymously here. If this individual wants credit, they can let me know. ;-)

Additional Donut Health Benefits:

If applied in sufficient qualities, has been known to be a mood enhancer with a side effect of weight gain.

Also effective to stop diarrhea if appropriately applied as an external "preparation".

Donut Health Myths

Dear HAAD Member,

Recently, it has come to the organization’s attention that there are potentially dangerous rumors being circulated about the medical benefits of donuts. In line with our mission to be a source of reliable donut information, we are distributing this email to clear up any confusion, and to highlight the true benefits of eating a weekly donut.

First, donuts have very few benefits when taken externally. The frosting on a fresh maple bar does make an effective pomade replacement, but the use of donuts as a depilatory, or to promote hair regrowth, is not supported by medical evidence (in fact, the suggestion that the same item could perform both functions should be seen as a warning that the claims are untrue). Also, the Sun Protection Factor of donuts is likely to be lower than a true sunblock, and will vary widely by type of donut. Donuts are likewise largely ineffective when used externally to deal with skin problems, such as acne, psoriasis, or dandruff. However, the use of donuts to prevent dry skin is effective.

Second, some claims for the internal use of donuts can easily be demonstrated to be false. While the tooth-whitening effect of donuts is well supported by medical research, donuts are not an effective replacement for regular dental checkups, as has been claimed. Donuts can be part of a sensible weight-reduction plan, but as with so many single-food diets (the Grapefruit Diet, the Atkins Diet, the Mud Diet), a donut diet will not contain all the nutrients necessary for good health and fitness. A donut and apple diet will be healthy and safe, however. Donuts should also not be used as a replacement for regular vaccination. While applying a donut to the site of a wound has been demonstrated to slow the spread of tetanus, only a tetanus shot can prevent longer term problems.

We hope this information helps to clarify some true donut benefits. Feel free to contact your local HAAD representative with any questions.

PS->Come eat a health donut tomorrow @10:00 in the Donut Lounge.

Not a donut blog, but still worth a look!

HsO Sports Fans,

On March 15th, 2008, the HsO’s own Ali Dauble, Kristina McCann-Grosvenor, and Becka Baldwin took a little swim in the bay as part of the Newport Fishermen’s Wives Survival Suit Races. An anonymous (to me) member of the community took a video of the entire event, and provided us a copy. Because the wheels of the HsO turn exceedingly slow (but grind extremely fine), I’ve only just posted the HsO team portion of the video to the Activities page on the HsO website. It must be said, though, that this video is well worth waiting for.

Check it out here:

If it doesn’t make you extremely proud of your athletes (and possibly make you laugh yourself sick), you can’t call yourself a Hatfielder.

Delta-Oscar-November-Uniform-Tango-Sierra

Donut Fans,
I was looking up the NATO phonetic alphabet on Wikipedia the other day (don't ask me why) and I got to reading about pictographic writing, where letters are represented by a picture of something beginning with that letter (i.e. a picture of a donut for the letter "D"). This inspired me to make a donut-themed pictographic phrase for this week's donut announcement. Have fun figuring it out!

Also, come have a donut tomorrow @ 10am in the donut lounge.

Homemade Donuts? The Dream Continues...

There’s been some talk lately about someone (possibly the HsO) (Londi, we’re looking at you) bringing homemade donuts to the Wednesday Donut Festival. While this is a very good idea, there is a possibility that, due to the inexperience of the bakers, the whole experiment could end in tears. To prevent this from happening, I’ve compiled a list of appropriate vs. inappropriate donut toppings. Hopefully this will help guide the process to a successful conclusion.

1. Appropriate: Nuts
Inappropriate: Nails
2. Appropriate: Maple Frosting
Inappropriate: Maple Leaves
3. Appropriate: Powdered Sugar
Inappropriate: Powdered Glass
4. Appropriate: Cinnamon
Inappropriate: Cyanide
5. Appropriate: Sprinkles
Inappropriate: Tequila
6. Appropriate: Icing
Inappropriate: Ice
7. Appropriate: Soylent Green
Inappropriate: Soylent Orange
8. Appropriate: Bacon
Inappropriate: Tofu
9. Appropriate: Chocolate
Inappropriate: Chalk
10.Appropriate: Candied Fruit
Inappropriate: Fresh Fruit

419 Donuts

Dear Sir,

I am Mr. Mattias Johansson, Branch Manager of Mama's Old Fashioned Donuts of Nigeria, Lagos Branch. I have urgent and very confidential business proposition for you.

On June 6, 2008, an American Donut consultant/contractor with the Nigerian National Donut Corporation, Mr. Barry Kelly ordered 75,000,000 (Seventy Five Million) donuts from our bakery. On completion, I sent a routine notification to his forwarding address but got no reply. After a month, we sent a reminder and finally we discovered from his contract employers, the Nigerian National Donut Corporation that Mr. Barry Kelly died from choking on a donut. On further investigation, I found out that he died without making a Will, and all attempts by the American Embassy to trace his next of kin was fruitless.

I therefore made further investigation and discovered that Mr. Barry Kelly did not declare any kin or relations in all his official documents, including his donut order paperwork in my Bakery. This sum of total 75,000,000 donuts are still sitting in my Bakery, getting stale, as dormant account. No one will ever come forward to claim them, and according to Nigerian Law after 5 years, the donuts will revert to the ownership of the Nigeria Government if the baked goods owner is certified dead and nobody comes forward to claim them.

This is the situation, and my proposal is that I am looking for an American who will stand in as the next of kin to Mr. Barry Kelly. A bakery account abroad will then facilitate the transfer of these donuts to the beneficiary/next of kin. This is simple all you have to do is to immediately send me the details of a bakery location anywhere in the world for me to arrange the proper donut transfer paperwork. The donuts will then be shipped this bakery for us to share in the ratio 70% for me; 30% for you.

There is no risk at all as all the paperwork for this transaction will be done by me using my position and connection in the Bakery in Nigeria. We shall employ the services of an attorney to draft the Will and obtain all necessary documents and letters of administration in your favour for the transfer. This transaction is guaranteed. If you are interested, please reply immediately via the private email address below. Please observe utmost confidentiality, and rest assured that this transaction would be most profitable for both of us because I shall require your assistance to help eat my share.

Awaiting your urgent reply via my email: dontbotheremailing@mail.com

Thank you and regards.

Mr. Mattias Johansson.

The Donut Pokey

7/23/2008, 8:28 AM

The Donut Pokey (sung to the tune of...what do you think? Old MacDonald?)

You put your right hand in,
You take a donut out;
You hold that donut up,
Then you cram it in your mouth.
You do the Donut-Pokey,
And you turn yourself around.
That's what it's all about!

You put your left hand in,
You take a donut out;
You hold that donut up,
Then you cram it in your mouth.
You do the Donut-Pokey,
And you turn yourself around.
That's what it's all about!

You put your whole head in,
You put your whole head out;
You put your whole head in,
and then you graze just like a cow.
You do the Donut-Pokey,
And you turn yourself around.
That's what it's all about!

Other Uses for Donuts

7/15/2008, 5:16 PM

You know, it's never been a problem here at Hatfield, but it can (rarely) happen that donuts live past their prime. In those unlikely circumstances, it's best to buy some new donuts, and to find an alternate use for the vintage ones. Here are a few ideas:
1. Drink Coaster
2. Paper Weight
3. Door Stop
4. Dog Toy (best not to let the dog eat it, though)
5. Support for the short leg of the couch
6. Pen and Pencil Holder
7. I'm tired and
8. can't think of
9. three more, sorry.
10. Feed it to a graduate student

Come have a fresh donut, Wednesday 10:00 in the staff lounge.

6/25/2008, 9:21 AM

Johansson's Believe it or Not #1
Did you know that in ancient Greece, Donuts, at the time called donutidis, were considered the food of the gods, and that many people believed that if you ate enough donuts in your lifetime, you would earn a special place in the Elysian Fields?
Believe it, or Not!

Come earn some credit toward heaven this morning at 10:00 in the staff lounge.

For the love of a good woman (or barring that, a good donut).

5/28/2008, 9:14 AM

Have you ever been in love?
You know, the way you can remember every detail, even after they're gone?
The way they feel, the way they smell, the way they make your fingers greasy when you touch them?

That's how I feel about donuts.

Come join the HsO this morning in the staff lounge (10:00) for coffee and love.

We'd also love it if you gave us your money.

Donuts?

5/14/2008, 9:04 AM

Hatfielders,
There comes a time in every person's life where he or she feels unfulfilled, and empty inside. For me, this feeling comes every Wednesday at 10:00. It means I need a donut. Come join me (and the HsO) in filling the emptiness inside with pastry this morning in the staff lounge. There will also be coffee. BYOMug. You can also help fill the emptiness inside our donation jar.

To donut, or not to donut: that is the question. (The first creative post?)

4/30/2008, 8:33 AM
